Background: This gene encodes a 110-kD transmembrane glycoprotein thatis highly expressed by human monocytes and tissue macrophages. Itis a member of the lysosomal/endosomal-associated membraneglycoprotein (LAMP) family. The protein primarily localizes tolysosomes and endosomes with a smaller fraction circulating to thecell surface. It is a type I integral membrane protein with aheavily glycosylated extracellular domain and binds to tissue- andorgan-specific lectins or selectins. The protein is also a memberof the scavenger receptor family. Scavenger receptors typicallyfunction to clear cellular debris, promote phagocytosis, andmediate the recruitment and activation of macrophages. Alternativesplicing results in multiple transcripts encoding differentisoforms.
