Background: Nak1, a NR4 Nerve Growth Factor-Like receptor, has been shown to affect the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, neuronal differentiation, neuroendocrine regulation of adrenocortical function, and T-cell apoptosis. Nak1 also is known as nuclear receptor Tr3 and is similar to mouse Nur77 and rat NGFI-B. It is encoded by one of the immediate early genes (IEG) in response to nerve growth factor and other serum growth factors. Nak1 can bind to DNA as a monomer, homodimer, or heterodimer (with retinoid X receptors). Nak1 has been shown to inhibit vascular lesion formation and could serve as a novel target in the treatment of vascular diseases.
