Background: This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XXI collagen, amember of the FACIT collagen family (fibril-associated collagenswith interrupted helices). Type XXI collagen is localized totissues containing type I collagen so, like other members of thiscollagen family, it may serve to maintain the integrity of theextracellular matrix. An alternatively spliced transcript varianthas been described, but its full-length nature has yet to bedetermined.
