Background: GALNT10 belongs to the polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (pp-GalNAc-T) family. Polypeptide GalNAc transferases initiate the synthesis of mucin-type oligosaccharides by transferring GalNAc from UDP-GalNAc to the hydroxyl group of either a serine or threonine residue on the polypeptide acceptor. Following expression in insect cells, recombinant GalNAc transferase 10 showed significant GalNAcT activity toward mucin-derived peptides, and it utilized both nonglycosylated and glycosylated peptide substrates. This gene belongs to the polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (pp-GalNAc-T) gene family. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.
